The Orthodox Christian Youth Movement

The Orthodox Christian Youth Movement (OCYM), the Youth-wing of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church is in its 77th year of active leadership and Christian witness in the Church and society. It contributes to the goodness and progress of the Church and community in the three-fold path of worship, study and service. It aims at molding the minds and visions of the youth against the background of the contemporary issues.

Historical Background

The roots of the Youth Movement can be traced back to the latter half of the nineteenth century when visionary leaders of the Church recognized the need for organized youth ministry. During this period, local youth fellowships known as Yuvajana Sangams functioned in various parishes alongside organizations such as the Sunday School and Suvishesha Sangam.

These organizations played a significant role in strengthening the faithful and safeguarding the traditions and teachings of the Malankara Orthodox Church during challenging times.

In 1933, efforts were made to unite the various local youth fellowships under a common structure. This vision became a reality through the leadership of Joseph Mar Severios Valakuzhyil Episcopa, who served as President, and Rev. Fr. T. S. Abraham, who served as Secretary. Thus, a Parish-Centered Syrian Yuvajana Sangam was established.

A major milestone was achieved in 1936 during the historic conference held at Mavelikara, where the vision and scope of the organization were expanded. The Yuvajana Sangam was officially recognized as the youth wing of the Church under the leadership of Geevarghese Mar Philexinos (Puthenkavil Kochu Thirumeni) as President and P. E. Daniel (later Daniel Mar Philexinos) as General Secretary.

Another significant development took place in 1958 during the annual conference held at Puthuppally, where the organization officially adopted the name Orthodox Christian Youth Movement (OCYM). During the same period, steps were taken to launch a monthly publication titled Orthodox Youth, which is now published under the name Orthodox Yuvajanam.
